2017 Season Preview

Ocean found themselves in a rare spot last season as they finished under .500 for the first time since 1995. Granted, the schedule was rough, and 7 of their 13 losses were by 4 points or less. This is a very tough team to get a read on without seeing them in action. Outside of Jake Benner and Adam Manzo, nobody really jumps off the screen at you, but if you peel back the layers, there is potential here for Ocean to surprise quite a few people, which is what they are hoping to do.

The strength of the lineup should be from 106-138/145. Jake Benner is the hammer in the lineup and will be looking to follow up his 36-win season with an eye on the Boardwalk Hall podium. Fellow junior Adam Manzo joins Benner as the only other Spartan returning with Region experience. He showed great improvement from his frosh to sophomore season and will be looking to continue that trend in 2017. Keep an eye on senior John Santos here. He has had a strong offseason and has put in the work to take his game to the next level. Sophomores Anthony Esposito and Will Tisony will be looking to make names for themselves after being stuck behind some solid names on the depth chart a year ago. The freshmen, Jack Nies and Alex Poniros, have a ton of potential and will look to make noise right out of the gate. Also bolstering this group for Ocean is senior Nick Villapiano who returns to the team after time off the mats. Could be a very surprising bunch here.

Outside of that stretch, Ocean will be looking for big years out of returning seniors Esteban Bernard and Clayton Oates. They'll be looked to not only for wins, but leadership for a large group of newcomers to the starting lineup. Junior Saif Ali and sophomore Emerson Derose were also behind some tough names on last year's depth chart and will look to make their mark. Among the other new faces will be a trio at heavyweight. They're unproven, but there's excitement about their potential. Finally, Muhammad Ali is at 170. Folks... Muhammad Ali!

As mentioned, this is a tough team to get a read on this early. The team was hammered by graduation in 2016, but if everything falls into place, and the newcomers make an immediate impact, the Spartans could be a Top 10 team. They have an interesting date on 12/23 at Pt. Boro (a dual that Ocean won by a point in 2015, and Boro responded with a criteria win in 2016) that will give us a good look as to where they're at, and they have The Mustang on the 12/28. The first big division test comes on 1/4 as they host Long Branch. Other big matches on the slate include the divisional battle with Wall, a tri with Colts Neck and Raritan, and a quad with Middletown North, Hopewell Valley, and Roxbury.
