A nice mix of proven veterans, promising newcomers, and returning starters ready to ascend to the next level comprise the lineup for the 2018 Spartans.

The big name returning is Jake Benner, the State Champion at 138 last season. He's joined by Alex Poniros, who finished 2nd in the Region to advance to Atlantic City in his rookie season, District runner-up, Saif Ali, and junior Emerson Derose, to give Ocean a solid stretch from 138-160.

There's potential for a very strong group of lowerweights here, highlighted by Region qualifiers Jack Nies and Adam Manzo. Will Tisony will be looking to make a name for himself in 2018 after seeing limited action last season behind Manzo, Poniros, and John Santos. He could surprise this season. There's some strong depth down here too with a talented freshmen class that includes Demetri Poniros and AJ Benner, who are coming off very successful grade school careers.

The level of success the Spartans can have as a dual team may be determined by the upperweight stretch from 170-up. The four starters returning in this group, Christian Wilson, Anthony Esposito, Evan Romein, and Ruan Faria have all put in the work in the off-season with an eye on having big years this season. The heavyweight slot will have a slew of youngsters looking to take the spot. Keep an eye on the tough frosh, Joe Leteri, to possibly see a lot of time up there, as well as Wilson, Dino Poniros, and Anthony Perez to come up from 220.

There's a pretty good mix here, with some very nice depth that will give coach Cippy Apicelli the ability to make a lot of lineup moves. The strength looks to be that group in the middle, but if the newcomers down low wrestle to their potential, and the returners up top take the next step forward, this should be a very tough, and balanced lineup. It won't take long for Ocean to figure their place in B-North as they travel to Long Branch on January 3rd, host Middletown North in a quad on the 6th, and face Wall on the 10th. Another date to circle is February 3rd as the Spartans travel to Phillipsburg for the first ever meeting between the two programs. Individually, we obviously keep an eye on Benner to see if he can successfully repeat as State Champion, and the Spartans will look for a strong performance as a team to defend their District 24 Team Championship.
